Ocean Flowers was my first painting after giving birth — and the beginning of finding my way back to myself throughmaking.
It took me two months to create. Taking that long felt like a luxury. Rather than rushing towards an outcome, I allowed myself to move slowly, adding layer after layer of colour, mark and detail. It gave me the rare opportunity to be completely present with the painting, letting it unfold in its own time.
I knew my first painting back needed to feel calm. I didn’t want to place any pressure on myself to make something important or impressive. I simply wanted to paint something that felt peaceful.
For me, this piece became a reflection on the quiet strength women carry. We can be wild balls of energy — full of movement, feeling and life — while somehow finding a stillness within ourselves when the world around us becomes stormy. There is a softness to that strength, but it is no less powerful for being gentle.
The flowers rise from the ocean like little bursts of energy, grounded by the calm horizon. They remind me of the way women can bend, grow and move with the changing tides, while remaining deeply rooted.
Painted with heavy body acrylics and oil sticks, the surface is built through layers of loose marks, delicate details and expressive colour. The longer I spent with it, the more it revealed itself — a painting about presence, resilience, motherhood and the calm that can exist alongside chaos.
A celebration of inner strength, softness and the wild beauty of being a woman.
